The Dazzling Moon - How It Looks
Have you ever been curious about the moon? Read on to learn about how the moon looks.
When you walk outside on a clear night, look up and admire the beauty of the moon. It lights up the sky with its glow. While you might think, the moon emits its own light it actually doesn't - the moon simply reflects the light from the sun. On different nights, the moon takes on different shapes, these are the phases of the moon. When we see it fully reflecting the sun's light it's called the full moon. As the moon moves around the earth, it takes on different shapes such as the waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning crescent and the waning gibbous. Every 15 days, the moon appears to disappear only to grows back in the next 15 days.
Humans have been on the moon and the first one to set foot on the moon was Neil Armstrong! Based on observations from astronauts, the moon has craters created by space rocks. Moon is a rocky desert with mountains and plains. Interestingly, the plains are called "seas" even though there is no water on the moon.
Sometimes the moon appears in different colours, when the earth is between the sun and the moon and the earth's shadow makes moon appear red. When viewed from earth, the dust in the earth's atmosphere makes the moon appear orange or pink due to scattering of light by the dust particles in the earth's atmosphere.
There is much more to discover about the moon than how it looks. Stay tuned to learn more about the moon in episode 2 of The Dazzling Moon!
